DNA Sampling and Microchipping – FAQs

Note: DNA applications and Pony importation applications will not be processed unless accompanied with a valid equine premises number – click here for more information>

How do I register my foal?

You will need to complete an application form to apply for the DNA kit. This can be completed online or by paper application.  Please read the application points carefully before proceeding.

Section 1 – Pony Details. The first question is if the pony was issued a passport previously. This is most relevant for older ponies that have previously registered with another PIO (Passport Issuing Organisation).

Other details required – date of birth, sex and name choices. When choosing a name please give 3 options as some suggestions may be in use. For all applications we need the name of the sire and dam. You can use the online database to check for names already in use.

We also need to know if you are the registered owner of the dam. Please check the details of ownership page of the mare’s passport to confirm. If you are not the registered owner please see https://cpbs.ie/transfer-ownership/

Section 2 – Applicants Details. This will be the individual who the CPBS send the passport to. The CPBS will under no circumstances send a passport to anyone other than the registered owner of the pony.

If you are availing of the membership rate you must be the member. Membership is non transferrable between any two parties. See section 7 of the articles of association https://cpbs.ie/governence/articles-of-association/

How long will it take for my DNA kit to be issued?

Fully completed application (s) accompanied by the correct fee will be issued within 3-5* working days (* with exception to Show, Inspection and Festival times)

I need to register a 2 year old Connemara Pony what do I need to do?

This is the same process as a foal registration. Please see price list before submitting the application.  https://cpbs.ie/cpbs-fees/

I need to register a Connemara Pony but I don’t know the parentage, what can I do?

The CPBS will not accept any registration applications without pedigree. You will need to know the sire and Dam to register the pony.

I have completed my HWSD test privately can I select the cheaper rate for my DNA kit?

No. Both parents must be tested N/N trough the CPBS in order to avail of the cheaper rate.

How long before my passport is issued?

Time line on passport is approximately 8-10 weeks. This time line is for straight forward application that have no issues. If your registration results as an exclusion this will delay the process significantly.
