You must ensure the premises on which the animal is kept is registered with the DAFM Regional Office who will assign an EPN or amend your existing Herd Number to include equine. Full details and application form can be found at
 https://www.agriculture.gov.ie/animalhealthwelfare/animalwelfare/registrationofpremisesanimals/registrationofhorsepremises/

Transfer of Ownership

I have purchased a Connemara Pony and want to register it in my name?

You will need to complete a transfer of ownership application either online or by paper application. Please have this completed within 30 days of purchase in order to comply with EU legislation.

Section 1 – Animal Details. Pony name, UELN/studbook number, microchip/transponder number all can be found in the passport. Please ensure the microchip on the passport matches the microchip in your pony.  (If you discover any discrepancies with the chip please see FAQ on https://cpbs.ie/dna-comparison-service/)

Section 2 – Seller’s Details. This is the person you purchased the pony off regardless of whether that person is mentioned in the passport. You need to complete as much information as possible. For example if you purchased a pony at a mart or sale please enter location, date and lot number.  No signature is required from the seller.

Section 3 – New Owner’s Details. Please complete all necessary information, address including post code. Equine premises number is only relevant for people residing in the Republic of Ireland.

Section 4 – Payment.  Please select the correct fee, forms accompanied with the incorrect or no fee will be returned causing delays with the service. Sterling cheques and cash are not accepted.

Card details are shredded once they have been used to secure payment. We do not under any circumstance hold client’s card details for re-occurring or future use.

How long does it take to complete the transfer of ownership?

It takes approximately 3 – 5* working days (* with exception to Show, Inspection and Festival times) to complete the transfer. This is from the time we receive the application, passport and correct fee. Please note the pony is not transferred when you submit the application online, it is transferred when we receive the passport.

I have changed the ownership of my pony with one of your daughter societies how do I update the microchip with my new address?

The transponder in your pony does not hold any information. The transponder is the link from your pony to the passport. This is why it is vital that the ownership is changed as soon as possible. If the horse is found or rescued the transponder is unique to the Connemara Pony Breeders Society. When we are notified we will be able to forward your contact information.

In order for us to update the ownership of any pony we would need confirmation from the daughter society stating you completed the transfer with them.

I sold my pony over two years ago and it is still in my name how can I rectify this?

Please contact the office in writing for a full list of ponies registered in your name. We will post or email you the list. You can then inform us in writing of the ponies you have sold. We can then make the correct amendments to your account.

DNA Sampling and Microchipping

How do I register my foal?

You will need to complete an application form to apply for the DNA kit. This can be completed online or by paper application.  Please read the application points carefully before proceeding.

Section 1 – Pony Details. The first question is if the pony was issued a passport previously. This is most relevant for older ponies that have previously registered with another PIO (Passport Issuing Organisation).

Other details required – date of birth, sex and name choices. When choosing a name please give 3 options as some suggestions may be in use. For all applications we need the name of the sire and dam. You can use the online database to check for names already in use.

We also need to know if you are the registered owner of the dam. Please check the details of ownership page of the mare’s passport to confirm. If you are not the registered owner please see https://cpbs.ie/transfer-ownership/

Section 2 – Applicants Details. This will be the individual who the CPBS send the passport to. The CPBS will under no circumstances send a passport to anyone other than the registered owner of the pony.

If you are availing of the membership rate you must be the member. Membership is non transferrable between any two parties. See section 7 of the articles of association https://cpbs.ie/governence/articles-of-association/

How long will it take for my DNA kit to be issued?

Fully completed application (s) accompanied by the correct fee will be issued within 3-5* working days (* with exception to Show, Inspection and Festival times)

I need to register a 2 year old Connemara Pony what do I need to do?

This is the same process as a foal registration. Please see price list before submitting the application.  https://cpbs.ie/cpbs-fees/

I need to register a Connemara Pony but I don’t know the parentage, what can I do?

The CPBS will not accept any registration applications without pedigree. You will need to know the sire and Dam to register the pony.

I have completed my HWSD test privately can I select the cheaper rate for my DNA kit?

No. Both parents must be tested N/N trough the CPBS in order to avail of the cheaper rate.

How long before my passport is issued?

Time line on passport is approximately 8-10 weeks. This time line is for straight forward application that have no issues. If your registration results as an exclusion this will delay the process significantly.

DNA Comparison

I have purchased a Connemara Pony and the transponder is not reading what should I do?

You will need to complete a DNA comparison application. You must be the registered owner of the pony you are testing. (If it transpires that the pony is not the correct pony we will carry the transfer fee to another passport for you)

The form requires information on you, the owner and the pony. Please complete all fields. Please return the form with correct fee to the CPBS.

On receipt of the application we will send a DNA sampling envelope. You will need to get your vet to take the sample and forward it to Weatherbys Scientific for analysis.

Results take approximately 3 – 4 weeks and the possible outcomes are as follows.

Parentage Verified: This means that the current sample matched the original sample. We will send you a new chip and marking chart for your vet to complete. Please return completed chart with the passport and we will update it for you.

Excluded: This means that the current sample does not match the original sample. In this case the pony you own/have is not in possession of the correct passport. You will be required to return the passport to the CPBS office. At this point you would need to research the history of the pony to see if parentage can be verified. Depending on the findings you may be able to apply for a https://cpbs.ie/issue-duplicate-documents/ or https://cpbs.ie/dna-sampling-microchipping-registration-foals-ponies/

I can’t read the transponder in my foal what can I do?

If you are the breeder of the animal we will be able to send you a new microchip and marking chart.  Your vet will have to insert the transponder and sign and stamp the marking chart. Once we receive the marking chart and fee of €15 we will update the passport.

If you are not the breeder of the animal you will need to complete the DNA comparison test. https://cpbs.ie/dna-comparison-form/

The transponder in my pony does not match the passport.

If the transponder is registered on the CPBS database it is evident that you have the wrong passport and will have to apply for a duplicate passport if all other avenues are exhausted see https://cpbs.ie/issue-duplicate-documents/

If the transponder is not registered you can complete the DNA comparison test. If the results are positive we will be able to record the transponder in the pony’s passport. If the pony does not match you will need to do some research on the history of the pony.

Duplicate Passport

I have mislaid my passport how do I get a replacement?

You will need to apply for a Duplicate Passport. All duplicate passports have to be confirmed by DNA Comparison. All criteria must be met in order for a duplicate passport to be issued.

Firstly you will need to complete the duplicate application and send it to the CPBS office accompanied with the correct fee. We will process the application and send you a DNA sampling kit and marking chart.

Section 1 – Pony Details.  We require a minimum of the following: Transponder, sex and colour.

Section 2 – Details of the mislaid passport. For example if it was lost/stolen please give details of place e.g. a sale or pony show. We would also require details of when you reported the passport lost or stolen to an Garda Siochana

Section 3 – Applicant’s Details. The person applying for the duplicate passport. If you are availing of the membership rate the applicant must be a member. Membership is non transferrable. See section 7 of the articles of association https://cpbs.ie/governence/articles-of-association/

Section 4 – Transfer of Ownership Form. Only to be complete if you are not the registered owner of the pony according to our database.

Vendor’s/ sellers details this is the person you purchased the pony off regardless of whether that person is recorded in the passport. You need to complete as much information as possible. For example if you purchased a pony at a mart or sale please enter location, date and lot number. No signature is required from the seller.

New owner’s details. Please complete all necessary information, name & address including post code. Equine premises number is only relevant for people residing in the Republic of Ireland.

Section 5 – Indemnity and Declaration. Please read this carefully and follow instructions. Your signature and date is required if you agree to all terms described in the form.

Section 6 – Payment.  Please choose the correct amount as this will delay your application where a form is accompanied by the incorrect fee.

When you receive this kit you should book your vet. Do not book your vet before you complete the form. We require markings to be recorded on CPBS marking charts. Marking charts from any other PIO will be returned to be transferred.

The following items are included in the sampling kit: DNA sampling envelope, CPBS Vet marking chart and CPBS addressed envelope.

Please ensure you read the instructions on the reverse of the sampling envelope.  Also ensure that the vet confirms the microchip in the pony by writing it in the box provided on the marking chart beside the pony silhouette. The vet also needs to confirm the transponder on the DNA sample bag and must stamp and sign both of these items.

Please used registered post to ensure the kit’s recorded return to the CPBS office.

Once sample is confirmed to match that of the initial sample held by Weatherbys the duplicate passport will be issued to the applicant. The CPBS will under no circumstances send a passport to anyone other than the registered owner of the pony.

HWSD

I have completed my HWSD test privately can you stamp my pony’s passport?

No. The CPBS only recognises test results that we facilitate through Weatherbys Scientific.

How long before I get results of my pony HWSD status?

The time frame is approximately 8 weeks from the date the lab receives the sample.

I want to get my pony tested where do I start?

You can complete the application online or by paper application. The application requires the pony’s details; name, date of birth and UELN.  The second part of the form requires the owner’s details. This is the person the sampling kit will be posted to.  If you are availing of the membership rate the applicant must be a member. Membership is non transferrable. See section 7 of the articles of association https://cpbs.ie/governence/articles-of-association/

There is certain criteria to adhere to proceed with the test.

  1. The pony you are testing must have a transponder. If no transponder is present you must complete a DNA comparison https://cpbs.ie/dna-comparison-form/
  2. You must be the registered owner of the pony in order to proceed with the test. If you are not the registered owner you will be required to initially complete a transfer of ownership form https://cpbs.ie/transfer-ownership/

Prefix / Suffix Certificate

I want to register a prefix/suffix where can I apply?

You can apply online or by paper application. This service is only available to current registered members of the Connemara Pony Breeders Society.

Can I share a prefix/suffix with a business partner?

You can add co-owner’s to the prefix on the application. Once you register a prefix with the CPBS or a daughter society that prefix is registered for life and no other Breeder/Owner may subsequently use it in the registration of Connemara Ponies. The owner and co-owner must use this prefix in naming all animals bred by them.
