DNA Comparison – FAQs

Note: DNA applications and Pony importation applications will not be processed unless accompanied with a valid equine premises number – click here for more information>

I have purchased a Connemara Pony and the transponder is not reading what should I do?

You will need to complete a DNA comparison application. You must be the registered owner of the pony you are testing. (If it transpires that the pony is not the correct pony we will carry the transfer fee to another passport for you)

The form requires information on you, the owner and the pony. Please complete all fields. Please return the form with correct fee to the CPBS.

On receipt of the application we will send a DNA sampling envelope. You will need to get your vet to take the sample and forward it to Weatherbys Scientific for analysis.

Results take approximately 3 – 4 weeks and the possible outcomes are as follows.

Parentage Verified: This means that the current sample matched the original sample. We will send you a new chip and marking chart for your vet to complete. Please return completed chart with the passport and we will update it for you.

Excluded: This means that the current sample does not match the original sample. In this case the pony you own/have is not in possession of the correct passport. You will be required to return the passport to the CPBS office. At this point you would need to research the history of the pony to see if parentage can be verified. Depending on the findings you may be able to apply for a https://cpbs.ie/issue-duplicate-documents/ or https://cpbs.ie/dna-sampling-microchipping-registration-foals-ponies/

I can’t read the transponder in my foal what can I do?

If you are the breeder of the animal we will be able to send you a new microchip and marking chart.  Your vet will have to insert the transponder and sign and stamp the marking chart. Once we receive the marking chart and fee of €15 we will update the passport.

If you are not the breeder of the animal you will need to complete the DNA comparison test. https://cpbs.ie/dna-comparison-form/

The transponder in my pony does not match the passport.

If the transponder is registered on the CPBS database it is evident that you have the wrong passport and will have to apply for a duplicate passport if all other avenues are exhausted see https://cpbs.ie/issue-duplicate-documents/

If the transponder is not registered you can complete the DNA comparison test. If the results are positive we will be able to record the transponder in the pony’s passport. If the pony does not match you will need to do some research on the history of the pony.
